The DiGiovanna Institute for Medical Education & Research was established in 1990. Dr. Michael J. DiGiovanna D.O., CPI incorporated the Institute as part of the DiGiovanna Family Health and Wellness Center in order to bring patients of the Center as well as members of the community the latest medical advances in a wide variety of indications. Dr. DiGiovanna has received his advanced certification as a Certified Principal Investigator from the Association of Clinical Research Professionals and the Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research. Dr. DiGiovanna has participated in over 350 clinical investigations and worked with almost every major pharmaceutical company in the world, such as Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Boehringer Ingelheim, GlaxoSmithKline, Abbvie, Sanofi, Novo Nordisk, Amgen, Genentech, Roche, Bristol Meyers Squibb, and many others, as well as many smaller pharmaceutical companies. The Institute has participated in clinical investigations in Type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, cardiovascular disease including congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease and peripheral arterial disease, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis, low testosterone, complex regional pain syndrome, painful diabetic neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia, migraine headaches, and many more. The DiGiovanna Institute for Medical Education & Research is currently working with a biotech company, ALTuCELL, Inc. through a collaborative arrangement with the University of Perugia in Perugia, Italy and Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC on a stem cell-based treatment for Type 1 diabetes mellitus which has been shown to be a cure for Type 1 diabetes in pre-clinical trials and is now moving into human clinical trials. The DiGiovanna Institute for Medical Education and Research is also working through a collaborative agreement with the NASH Health Initiative in bringing advanced imaging techniques and medical treatments for approval in Non-alcoholic Steato-hepatitis (NASH). According to the World Health Organiziation (WHO), NASH is believed to be the next worldwide health crisis, affecting up to 25% of the world’s population, and even higher in certain populations. Dr. DiGiovanna tries to stay on the forefront of medical innovation and discovery, offering these advances to his patients and those in his community.
The DiGiovanna Institute for Medical Education and Research is also committed to bringing these advances to the next generation of physicians and medical providers. With affiliations at the New York Institute for Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, Touro College School of Health Sciences, Stony Brook University School of Health Technology and Management and Long Island University/C.W. Post School of Health Professions and Nursing, the Institute brings the latest medical advances to students from these programs in a structured, academic environment so that these students can bring this knowledge to their future patients. The advanced information taught to students in the Institute’s teaching program is layered on the basic science foundation taught in their preclinical years, providing these students with a remarkable wealth of opportunities to enhance their medical knowledge.
The DiGiovanna Institute for Medical Education & Research is currently actively enrolling patients in clinical investigations involving Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis, men with low testosterone, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and Clostridium difficile (C. diff) colitis infections. Participants in these clinical investigations receive free medical care, free laboratory tests, free investigational medication and can receive compensation for their time and travel expenses. Patients who participate in these clinical investigations are also serving a philanthropic mission, helping to bring new therapies and cures to themselves as well as to other people who suffer from the same disease.
